Aurora members are both alarmed and deeply concerned by the recent proposed changes in higher education legislation in Hungary.
The proposed legislation and the speed with which it will be enforced appears both punitive and directly targeted towards the Central European University (CEU); a highly regarded academic institution and partner in research across Europe. To deliberately target an academic institution delivering such positive benefits to Hungarian society makes little sense and only seeks to damage Hungary and curtail academic freedom.
We make public our support, not only for CEU, but for academic freedom in general, which is the foundation for excellent teaching and research that positively impacts society.
We join our other university colleagues worldwide in urging the Government of Hungary to avoid taking any legislative action that would compromise CEU's operations or independence and to support the principles of academic freedom.
