Ellucian, Eduventures, and the American Council on Education (ACE) have published a study “Deconstructing CBE” to help higher education leaders better understand competency-based education (CBE), including the diversity of institutional practices and paths forward. Through their survey, they developed a purpose-built scoring model looking at Scope, Attributes, Operations, Outcomes, and Commitment. The study concludes that there is a high interest in CBE, particularly for non-traditional learners. However, that practice is still relatively limited, and many institutions are still in an aspirational phase.
