Research grants cost money in the US too

In a study published last week, Karen A. Holbrook and Paul R. Sanberg from the University of South Florida show that American universities are losing significant amounts of money on externally funded research grants. The reason is simple and quite similar to the situation in Europe: the grants do not or inadequately cover indirect costs
