Switserland: More international than Swiss doctoral students

VU International News and Reviews No. 07 June 3 2013

June 2013

According to Lucas Bashung, author of “Doctoral Education’s Reform in Switserland and Norway”, international doctoral students now outnumber local ones in Switserland. The total number of doctoral students has doubled from 11.588 to 22.716 between 1992 and 2012, with foreigners comprising nearly 52% of all PhD students. Three quarters of these are European, the remaining quarter is dominated by Asians.
Mr Bashung points to the high quality of Swiss universities and to the country’s multilingualism as the main explanation of the trend.
