From 24th till 26th of March the Here visited the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The HERE study visit showcased how the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) in the Netherlands addresses social inclusion and tackles the issues of access and retention. This interactive visit engaged different staff members and students from the institution and also provided a national perspective.
Last week, on behalf of Aurora Universities Network Sanne Boomsa of the International Office at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Helena Gillespie from the University of East Anglia, presented the Aurora Internationalisation project. On the next day, Sandra Hasanefendic from the Aurora Doctoral Education Group introduced the ‘Inclusion policies for research: Improving (access to) the doctoral track and beyond.’
The event addressed all Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE), at all levels of knowledge and experience regarding the topic: university leadership, teaching staff and students and, given that this event would discuss the policy and system perspective, also ministry representatives. The event was centred around universities’ main activities for social inclusion in terms of target groups and their challenges; strategies for inclusion, structures, and instruments supporting inclusion, and the links to the institution’s research, and also to other strategic priority areas (internationalisation, outreach/third missions).
